Summer stockings restart in Programa Lince, Portugal

A team from Portugal’s “Programa Lince” (Lynx Program) has hit the field last month, in order to start maintenance procedures of the nearly 400 structures destined to the repopulation of the fields by the wild-rabbit (the Iberian Lynx’s main food source), and that are currently spread across an area of nearly 10.000 acres.

With the arrival of the summer and the high temperatures in Portugal, comes the need to intensify the field activities by the people in the “Programa Lince”. The dispatched teams will try to provide the optimal survival conditions to the populations of wild-rabbit present in the areas belonging to the project, during this time of scarcity.

This year, once again, the team is already cleaning and replenishing 116 drinking pits and 157 feeding pits  for the wild-rabbit, that are distributed across the regions of Moura, Barrancos and Serra do Caldeirão. Regions in which hunting activities keep colaboration protocols with the “Programa Lince”, for the rehabilitation of the Iberian-Lynx’s habitat in Portugal. Besides this structures, it is also needed to replenish 15 water fountains destined to the wild fauna (namely carnivores and ungulates); and to maintain 128 artificial wild-rabbit shelters.

During the summer period, the maintenance, the restocking (when needed) and the monitorization of this structures occurs every 3 weeks.

The works shall be concluded by the end of September, then the temperature and food availability conditions are once again favorable to that which is the Iberian-Lynx’s main prey, the wild-rabbit.

Being a project belonging to the LPN – Liga Portuguesa da Natureza (Portuguese League of Nature), the LPN is calling on everyone’s environmental sense.
